Raised on the Canadian prairies and in Ottawa (Dad worked for a Crown Corporation, so we moved around a bit), Private School educated (not because we were rich, but because before the end of Junior High the public school system was no longer interested in tolerating my personal approach to life), I studied History at University – funding my studies by working for the local phone company as a business/customer rep during the day, and working as a bouncer in various shithole nightclubs at nights.
After University, I spent the rest of my 20’s “having a good time,” and the less we speak of this, the better. Finally started to grow up (for some value of Adulting), in my early 30’s, eventually settling down, getting married to a woman who puts up with my crap, and embarking on a journey of raising a daughter who, thank goodness, mostly takes after her mother.
I’ve spent time working in various construction trades, a thankfully brief stint in the oil patch, retail, ran a bohemian cafe for a bit, several years on the night shift in a social work related capacity at the largest homeless shelter in North America, numerous no-skill grunt work jobs, farm/ranch hand, IT service desk, which lead to the longest term job I ever had, rising to become a Systems Architect. Also worked as a building manager, security guard… And just general gadfly about town.
I’ve travelled throughout Canada, coast to coast, and spend time living in numerous places in this great country. Also travelled through much of the Northwestern United States, China, and Europe. I’d like to see parts of Africa and South America some day, and have a perpetual fascination with the people, culture, and architecture of Russia, so travelling there is an itch I’d like to scratch at some point.
The things that make me happiest are my wife and daughter, wandering aimlessly across the prairies or mountains, sitting by a lake and failing to catch fish, and (don’t judge me) Roller Disco.
