Dell gets “Told” by it’s customers…

Posted by grelmar on March 6th, 2007

Subtitle: First Dell asked what their customers wanted, but will they listen to the answer?

Dell has been running a “suggestion box” on their company website for the past three weeks.

Clocking in at over 100,000 requests, take a wild guess at what the top suggestion from Dell’s customers was? Read the rest of this entry »

Windows Vista - not exactly “wow”

Posted by grelmar on March 4th, 2007

Subtitle: I suspect Vista will become the new bane of my existence.

This one is for the designated “tech guru” in any circle of friends/family. Bear with me while I give a bit of backstory.

About a year and a half ago a friend brought me their defunct PC and asked if I could get it up and running again. She just didn’t have the money to buy a new PC at the time, so she was hoping I could use my Mojo to bring it back from the dead. Read the rest of this entry »

Explaining DRM to Your Dad.

Posted by grelmar on February 17th, 2007

Subtitle: Newsflash - DRM hasn’t stopped sucking.

Quick linky post.

Here’s a good article over at Listening Post for people who have trouble explaining to others exactly why DRM is a bad thing.

How to Explain DRM to Your Dad

Well, I guess it’s time to go back to work.

Subtitle: The vacation didn’t accomplish what I wanted.

I have a love/hate relationship with my job. A very big part of me derives a great deal of satisfaction working in an altruistic field. Day in and day out, I work to improve the lives of the homeless in my city, ease their burdens, and on occasion I even play a small part in helping people get “out of the system” and return to a normal life. Flying isn’t fun anymore

Posted by grelmar on February 6th, 2007

Subtitle: And no, it’s not just the postt 9-11 crap.

There was a time, many years ago, where the anticipation leading up to taking a flight somewhere, anywhere, would bring on two or three days worth of giddy excitement. That time would have been about 20 odd years ago. Read the rest of this entry »

Just a quick post on some Open Source Software for Windows.

Posted by grelmar on February 3rd, 2007

Subtitle: For many, Windows is unavoidable. That doesn’t mean you have to be stuck with Microsoft’s other overpriced, crappy offerings.

A coworker reads my blog on a regular basis (lord knows why), and after he read the post from the other day about “Ignorance” he started asking some remarkably astute questions about Firefox and Open Source software in general. He downloaded and gave Firefox a kick at the can, and the next day he came back to work with that gleam of discovery look in his eyes. He gets it. I can safely say that the likelihood of him going back to using Internet Exploder is pretty close to nil. Read the rest of this entry »

Got a MySpace account, or know anyone who does?

Posted by grelmar on January 26th, 2007

Subtitle: You might want to pass this one along to your friends.

Personally, I refuse to have anything to do with MySpace. I firmly believe it is one of the greatest design disasters on the web. Not only is the core site itself horrifically designed, the user page creation tools are set up in a way to encourage users to make really bad pages too. Read the rest of this entry »

I have no sympathy for the ignorant.

Posted by grelmar on January 21st, 2007

Subtitle: Ignorant is different from a lack of intelligence.

Many moons ago, in one in one of my occasional escapes from city living, I took a job as a ranch hand at a relative’s. It was a nice enough job, plenty of hard physical work and fresh air. Didn’t pay worth a damn, but it came with free room and board so the money thing wasn’t that important. Read the rest of this entry »

Best Digg EVER!

Posted by grelmar on January 19th, 2007

Go Digg It.

57 Channels and nothing on…

Posted by grelmar on January 18th, 2007

Subtitle: And the networks wonder why people are watching less and less TV

I don’t really “watch” TV much anymore. Oh, sure, the TV’s on, and within view, for hours and hours on end, but I use it mostly as a kind of audio-visual “white noise” while I’m working/playing on the computer. It’s a bit of a bad habit, but not one I’m likely to break. It seems to help me break out of mental ruts. If I’m stuck on some niggling problem, I lean back in my office chair (notably, I spent twice as much on that office chair as I’ve ever spent on a TV - which should give you an idea of my priorities), turn slightly to the right, and look distractedly at the TV for a moment.
